Seven new business units are to be developed at Eabhal Business Park in Balivanich, Benbecula, in the Outer Hebrides.
Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) has launched a competitive bidding process to find contractors for the development works.
The project is part of a larger investment by HIE to create flexible workspaces in rural areas of the region.
The first phase of the Benbecula project was completed in 2020. This saw five small units developed in the business park, following a high level of interest from local businesses. They are now fully occupied with the last lease concluded in July 2021.
The new units will be for commercial, office or industrial use and have been designed by the Balivanich firm, Fraser Architecture, to meet modern building standards and to maximize the efficiency of internal spaces. Recycled materials will be used to provide the building with increased insulation.
This latest project is one of a series of small commercial units being developed by HIE across the Highlands and Islands to meet the growing demand from local businesses for affordable small premises. The units will measure approximately 40-60 m² each.
Joanna Peteranna, HIE Regional Manager for the Outer Hebrides, said: “Many small businesses want to grow, stay in the region and employ more people and that depends on the availability of suitable premises. This availability is also vital for attracting new businesses to the islands. We have seen a very strong demand for affordable small premises in Benbecula and this project is helping to meet that demand.
“We want to offer small units adapted to the changing needs of local businesses and incoming businesses, which are adopting new ways of working to meet new challenges.
